A good attorney–client relationship rests on trust and clear rules. The Turkish Attorneys' Act and the rules of professional conduct set the frame.

Attorney duties

Confidentiality (Article 36 of the Attorneys' Act) — absolute. Reporting on case progress. Diligent representation. Avoidance of conflicts of interest. Written fee agreement.

Client duties

Truthfulness — full and honest disclosure. Cooperation — providing documents on time. Fee payment per agreement. Respect for professional secrecy (the client too may not share confidential papers).

Fees

A written agreement before work begins. Statutory minimum tariff applies. Success fees are permitted but capped (not above 25% of the recovery).

Termination

Either side may terminate the engagement. The attorney must wind up the matter so as not to harm the client (warning, file handover, urgent steps).

Professional liability

The attorney is liable for negligence or error. Mandatory insurance covers it. Complaints first go to the bar association.

Professional secrecy

One of the strongest principles. Even before the court, the attorney does not reveal client secrets. Breach is criminal and disciplinary.
